I have been using Vagrant for some time now. I love the ability to customize and easily set up my local development environment. Especially when using a Windows laptop! I always spin up a box before hacking a new Ruby/Rails project.
My favorite editor. Sublime is my go to for most development tasks. Especially scripting.

Sublime is great. But I have recently enjoyed utilizing the full on power and productivity offered with this great IDE. Especially when using a laptop. I can manage Vagrant, Git, the terminal, and multiple projects from one window. Give RubyMine a try today!
Of course I love to use Ruby for as many things as I can. From systems scripts to databases. Well, web development is no different. I believe in the Rails way. Ultimate productivity and the ability to approach a common problem with a common set of expectations. Rails is the way I choose to build server side web applications.
For Ruby apps, my favorite distribution of Linux to work with is Ubuntu. Packaging system, development tools, and community are among the top reasons I choose server and desktop versions of this OS for all things development.
Of course every one needs a way to manage all these beautiful systems and codebases. I prefer Git/Hub. My Github is here.

Choosing the method in which to make your applications and services accessible is an important one. I don't run a small datacenter out of my house so choosing a provider is typically a no brainer. I love using Heroku to get an app out the door quickly. Heroku has an easy to work with interface, decent options, and great scaling capabilities. For situations in which I need more control, being a systems administrator of course I am not one to be afraid of the terminal, I go with Digital Ocean. I find the pricing reasonable, great options to choose from when customizing your stack. They are truly centered around developers and work to provide a convenient yet effective hosting platform. I will select the latest Ubuntu distribution, scale it as I wish, select a default Rails template packed with NGINX and Unicorn - or of course start from scratch and roll my own! Customer support is also amazing for both these providers!
9 - 5 Work
I have experience with other flavors of application development and operating systems. Aside from my current interests, I work in an environment quite different from the one at home. I do code in Java quite frequently. Not to mention I babysit JVM's for a living.
In my work environment, a Java shop, we choose to Build a Better Enterprise -
Spring Framework. Spring breathes life into the modern enterprise from offering a modular assortment of everything a modern business may need. As well as a heavy hitting arsenal for your army of Java junkies - MVC Web Framework, Object Relational Mapping with Hibernate, MongoDB, Redis, RabbitMQ,Testing, Security, Hypermedia REST API's, and Batch processing. The Spring Tool Suite is an eclipse based tool that I prefer to use because of the it's tight integration with all of the Spring tools.
In the enterprise setting, I work with Red Hat products on a daily basis. Starting with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Open source with stellar support.
As I said I really do prefer to work with Git. But I must retain my standing as a jack of all trades. I am a CollabNet administrator. I manage SVN on a daily basis. Subversion Edge is a pretty nice way of keeping the business connected through code. It has a great interface, easy to install and maintain, and backed by great support. CollabNet did invent Subversion in the first place and still play an active role in its development.
